Our district provides a comprehensive education program for students with disabilities. A network of general and special education teachers, paraprofessionals, related services personnel, and the child study team are responsible for addressing the educational goals of each student identified as in need of specialized instruction.
The child study team, composed of a learning consultant, a school psychologist, a school social worker and, when appropriate, a speech/language therapist, works closely with staff, parents/guardians, and other personnel to identify students in need of special education services. A comprehensive evaluation and classification process is conducted as prescribed by NJ education code. For each eligible student, the IEP team develops an initial individualized education program (IEP) that identifies goals and measurable objectives as well as instructional modifications, related services, and programs needed to assist the student to meet these educational goals in the least restrictive environment. After the initial IEP, the plan is reviewed yearly with the case manager and teachers. A student is reevaluated every three years or earlier, if necessary.
Educational Programs Our district provides a full range of educational programs for students with disabilities from the least restrictive in-class support model to pull out self-contained classes and placement in programs in other school districts. Our resource center programs provide in-class and pullout support for students, often in language arts or math.
Students with autistic spectrum disorders and other physical disabilities receive specially designed instruction that links a functional curriculum to core curriculum content standards. Lessons and instructional methods are adopted according to the unique needs of each individual. Our district supports increasing social opportunities for students with multiple disabilities and therefore, students with disabilities are included in all domains of the school community with support when needed.
Our preschool disabilities program, located at the Florence M. Burd School, is designed to meet the needs of children with disabilities ages three through five. These children have an identified disabling condition and/or a measurable developmental delay. Our PSD program provides a nurturing and appropriate setting to address each student's needs.
Our district provides certified speech and language specialists to assist students in developing the skills needed to become successful communicators. In determining eligibility for speech and language services, criteria include the areas of articulation, voice, language, and fluency. Speech/language therapy may also be a related service for students with disabilities who have IEP’s.
Procedures for Requesting a Child Study Team Evaluation Request for evaluation must be submitted in writing. Two (2) forms are completed by either the parent or staff member. The first form documents interventions that have been attempted in regular education and the effectiveness of each intervention. This documentation is required by NJ code governing referrals for CST evaluations. The second form, an explanation of the reason for referral, is signed by the person requesting the evaluation. Forms may be obtained from the building principal or Child Study Team. Any questions regarding the CST referral process may be addressed to the CST.
