SAFETY TOWN |
Statistics tell us that one out of three families will visit the hospital this year as a result of an accident that could have been avoided. Accidents are the leading cause of death in children. As parents and guardians, what can we do? Ben Franklin's saying that, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is the goal of the Safety Town Program*. Since safety is a vital issue, learning safety concepts should not be left to trial and error. The Safety Town Program presents safety concepts in a child-centered, interesting manner, appropriate to kindergartners. The Andover Regional School District is proud to sponsor Safety Town, a program that teaches safety in our everyday environment. The program is run by two certified teachers and will include Andover police, firemen and rescue personnel. To add realism, students will have opportunities to apply the Safety Town rules using houses, sidewalks, traffic signs and signals which will enable students to practice pedestrian, big wheel and bike safety. A trip to the hospital and visits from the police, fire department and rescue squad will show children how other people make safety their business every day. The Andover Regional Safety Town Program will be held July 9th through July 20th at Florence M.Burd School. Two sessions will be offered from 8:30 - 10:30 and 11:00 - 1:00. Parents are responsible to provide transportation to and from the program. A registration fee of $55 covers the entire two weeks, which includes all materials, trips and daily refreshments. Space is limited, so return the registration form and fee early. If you need any further information, please call Mr. Muccilli, Principal of Florence M. Burd School at (973) 940-1234. Safety Town is sponsored by the National Safety Town Council, Cleveland, Ohio, and is endorsed by the National Safety Council. Safety Town was started in Mansfield, Ohio in 1937 and has been presented throughout the country since that time. Now, Safety Town is being offered in Andover. |
