Our PSD-8 guidance program is a resource center for teachers, parents, and administrators. The guidance counselor works with students individually or in groups to promote a positive self-concept as well as academic, personal and social growth. In addition, the guidance counselor uses the results from state and local assessments which may be helpful in developing a student's educational program.

Student assistance can be realized in different ways at Andover Regional. Teachers consult with the guidance counselor for help in meeting the needs of their students. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s guidance counselor to discuss any concerns they might have about their child. Students may seek help on their own for assistance with a problem.

Our guidance program includes instruction in a safe and supportive environment which promotes open communication and dialogue. Topics include:

s Study Habits & Organizational Skills

s Self-Esteem & Self-Identity

s Decision Making

s Setting Goals

s Friendships & Conflict Resolution

s Popularity

s Peer Pressure

s Responsibility

s Dealing With Anger & Stress

s Use, Misuse, and Abuse of Controlled Dangerous Substances

Students in grade 8 receive instruction in Career Exploration. High school options are discussed. They explore careers by participating in computer interest inventories and personality tests. The students are required to write a short paper describing a career of interest or a career matched to their interest inventory. An oral presentation about their career choices is planned during their language arts classes.

In closing, our counselors are eager to provide worthwhile and relevant experiences for all our students. We want our students to believe in themselves and understand that “Success Begins Today.”
