Florence M. Burd School is proud to have the distinction of being the first School of Promise in New Jersey. As a member of Secretary of State Colin Powell's initiative, "America's Promise" FMB uses its locally developed and funded program, the H.E.R.O. (Helping Everyone Read Outstandingly) Program, to help slower paced readers "crack the code" and read. Our school's curriculum continues to be outstanding as it is aligned with the Core Content Standards and includes the areas of communication arts, mathematics, science, social studies, keyboarding, health and family life education. The academic program is broadened with art, music, physical education, library skills and Spanish. The instructional program demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy that education should be child-centered with hands-on and interactive real world learning experiences.

FMB offers programs for students with special needs through its resource center, classes for learning and language disabilities, speech instruction, English as a second language, Basic Skills Improvement Program and a preschool disabilities class. The gifted and talented program enhances the regular curriculum providing selected students with many opportunities to think productively and creatively.

The communication arts program continues to develop the students' appreciation and excitement for reading, writing, listening and speaking. Using grade appropriate materials, students develop confidence as effective producers and consumers of language. The mathematics program, "Everyday Mathematics" is based upon the research and development of the University of Chicago Math Project. At the K-4 level, the program involves students in developing mathematical concepts through a hands-on approach. The "Full-Option Science System" (FOSS) integrates real world science with experimentation and interaction with multimedia materials. |
The Andover Regional School District strives to improve the school system by continually expanding the technology program and increasing the number of computers in the classrooms and specialized personnel. Our "Night of the Arts" and "New Jersey Day" offer a variety of experiences that will serve our children well throughout their lifetimes. |
Florence M. Burd School is an excellent school staffed with caring, dedicated teachers. We welcome your calls, concerns, praise and input. Together, as one educational community, parents, teachers and students can "Catch the Learning Spirit!" |
